It’s a wonderful life…

Because I get to see the mess created by five year old hands learning their way around the kitchen.

Because of homemade ciabatta bread croutons, baked with olive oil and kosher salt.

And some freshly shaved parmesan never hurt matters, either.

Because of little girls who spend twenty minutes fashioning the perfect heart-shaped biscuit for their daddy.

Because of the patina on the baking sheet that has faithfully seen us through every holiday, every good time and bad time.

Because my children are learning to do things they can someday teach their own children.

Who will, of course, live with me. Because I said so.

Because a two year old in a footie sleeper and a five year old in a Cleopatra Halloween costume can have the best "Valemtime's Day ever" with their very own mama in their very own kitchen.

Because I can see the years slipping through my hands with every blink, and because I have a camera to document the moments.

Because plastic cups are just as good as fancy biscuit cutters.

Because the jumbly, misshapen ones taste better than the perfectly round ones when you see the pride on your baby's face.

Because even though my Valemtime's Day wasn't full of jewelry and trips to Paris, it was full of love and good food.

And hello? There were warm homemade biscuits at my Valemtime's Day. Beat that with a stick.

And you? Did anything special happen to you on Valemtime's Day?

That was wonderful reading about your day. I'll bet Daddy loved it. Our day was out of the ordinary because 1. We did not go out to celebrate - too crowded in all the restaurants, so we'll do lunch today. 2. We watched the snow fall heavily while I read out loud from "Same Kind of Different As Me", 3. We had no chocolate in the house so I made a small batch of Grandma Sooter's Peanut Butter and Chocolate Frosting and we each had a tiny bowl full of that(!), and 4. We watched an episode of "All Creatures Great and Small" and wished again that we lived in Great Britain somewhere, during a slower, less complicated time. The only thing missing was being able to be with far away little ones.

Absolutely precious story. I worked 13 hours--usually do. Halfway through the day, my Mom and my nephew's wife showed up with enough cookies for everyone on both shifts. Yes, she is special that way!! Oh, and I saved 2 lives today. I love my job. And my family. Saturday was a family birthday party full of noise and laughter.

My baby said "I love you, Mama" for the first time. I could not have asked for a better Valentine's gift. Now I must go make biscuits, because yours look delicious.

Cooking with kids is just so fun.

My Valwemtime's Day was partly lived on February 13th- we flew a kite. First time ever. Three times it landed on top of our "house" and picked itself up and flew again. There's something wonderful about a four year old Son and a 49 yr old Mama flying a kite together. Then the son ran around the yard with the kite five feet in the air giggling. Now, THAT'S a Valwemtime's Day I love.

For my Valwemtime, Vincent Wesley. Love, Mama

I hopped in my car with my partner and drove aimlessly through Pioneer Valley here in Massachusetts. We ate greasy cheeseburgs. We had a cold, draft beer. And then we went home to our twin boys and smiled, smiled, smiled....

You are so right to cherish each precious minute, the time seems to zip by faster and faster the older you get! My girl celebrated birthday number 33 on the 13th - she was, is, and will always be my special valentine...
